G-SHOCK Battery Life by Model (With Module Numbers)

Short answer

G-SHOCK battery life depends on the model and module: about 2 years for the G-7900 and older DW-5600, about 3 years for the GA-2100 and GM-2100, about 5 years for the GA-700 and newer DW-5600, and about 10 years for the GA-V01. Tough Solar models such as the GA-B2100, GW-6900, GW-M5610 and GMW-B5000 recharge from light and run for months on a full charge.

These are Casio's ratings for the stock reference of each model, sorted from longest to shortest. Battery models list years on one battery; solar models list months of running time from a full charge with no light.

Why the same model can have two battery ratings

Casio updates the module (the movement and electronics) inside long-running models. The DW-5600 is rated about 2 years on module 3229 and about 5 years on the newer module 3525. The GW-6900U with module 3547 is rated about 10 months per charge, against about 9 months for the earlier module 3179.

How to find your G-SHOCK module number

The four-digit module number is printed on the case back, next to the model name. Search Casio's support site for that number to get the exact manual and battery rating for your watch.

How long do solar G-SHOCKs last?

Tough Solar watches charge a rechargeable battery from a solar panel in the dial, so in normal daily wear they never need a battery change. Casio says about 8 minutes of direct sunlight gives a day of power. A full charge runs about 7 months on a GA-B2100 and about 10 months on a GW-M5610 without any light.

When and how to replace a G-SHOCK battery

A fading display or a watch that stops means a battery model needs a new cell. Have it replaced by Casio service or a watch shop that changes the gasket and pressure-tests the case, because opening the case back affects water resistance.

Casio's U.S. limited warranty excludes the battery, so a battery replacement is a paid service even on a new watch.

FAQ

How long does a G-SHOCK battery last?

Between about 2 and 10 years depending on the model and module, according to Casio: about 3 years on a GA-2100 and about 10 years on a GA-V01.

Do solar G-SHOCKs ever need a new battery?

Rarely. The rechargeable cell can lose capacity after many years; if a fully charged watch no longer holds a charge, Casio service or a watch shop can replace it.

What battery does a GA-2100 take?

The GA-2100 uses two SR726W silver-oxide batteries and is rated about 3 years, according to Casio.
